Cutting Board Care

Wash

Hand wash with warm water and mild hand soap, then towel dry immediately. Avoid using stronger soaps or detergents (for example, Dawn), as they can contain solvents that may damage or remove the finish on the board.

DO NOT RUN YOUR BOARD THRU THE DISHWASHER.

Store

Store boards standing or leaning upright, resting on end. Avoid leaving the board flat on any surface for more than a day, especially if exposed to moisture, as this may cause the board to warp. The exception to this is if the board has feet installed that raise it and allow airflow under the board.

Treat

Renew with any store bought board conditioner, Subi’s Wood Conditioner, or with basic mineral oil, so long as it is food safe. Rub the product onto the wood and let sit for anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours, then buff the excess off with a clean cloth. Should be done at least once a year if lightly used, as often as biweekly for heavily used boards, or as needed to restore luster or sheen.

IMPORTANT: If the board is used for food preparation or serving, please ensure that whatever product you use is definitively food safe. There are many online resources available thru a simple web search, and I do offer my own small batch product on the store page, Subi’s Wood Conditioner.

Refinish / Restore

In the event the board surface becomes damaged, has accumulated heavy knife marks from regular use, or has lost its protective finish and become stained from use, there are several options:

- Using an oscillating circular sander, and progressively higher sanding grits from 80 to at least 320, remove material on the surface until the damage is no longer visible. Once the desired smooth surface is achieved, refinish with any quality wood conditioner (see ‘Treat’ section above for some ideas) and enjoy your restored board!

- Contact me, let me know the issue, and ship the board back for me to attempt a repair. Customer covers shipping unless the issue is definitively a manufacturing defect.

Please note that even after any of the actions taken above, the board surface may not return to its original appearance, based on age, degree of damage, and by nature of differences in the wood itself.
